about

This song was written with Norwegian Soul singer, Erik Røe of The Canoes and Danish singer/songwriter Tobias Stenkjær and a school teacher from Stavanger named Birger Bekkeheien. At a fairly wild party on an island in a fjord, those guys were off in a corner with this riff and Erik was singing "When you lean into the night/You're the fire, you're the light". The next morning, they brought it to me because they thought I'd have the poetic touch with the lyric. Tobias laid down this guitar track in one take in the old studio of Arne Hovda (another guy from The Canoes) and this take is essentially the first time I ever sang this song through. It's one of the only times i've sung the song actually because I can't play this guitar part so I don't do it live. Tobias and I never seem to find the time so sit down so he can teach it to me. It's the only tune on this EP that wasn't recorded by Eric Ambel in his studio.

lyrics

gone

by chris barron, erik røe, tobias stenkjaer and birger bekkeheien

when the morning breaks it won’t outshine the fire
the stars have used to show you that you’re tired
and when the daylight backs away
and the stars defeat the day
i’ll be gone

there are bridges left to cross and leave in flames
and paths to leave all strewn with crushed remains
let the lesson stay unlearned
gonna leave this stone unturned
‘cause i’ll be gone

when you lean into the night
you’re the fire, you’re the light
and me, i’ll be nowhere to be found
i know that there will be a song
for every broken heart and soul
i know that there will be a coin
to drop in every begging bowl
but me, i’m going down

in the sad and sighing music of the lyre
we’re just embers in the ashes of desire
and when the cloth has left the loom
and sweet morning sweeps the room
i’ll be gone

...to the valley where the storm clouds make the crown
that weighs upon the head of the sky that’s like a gown
on the lady who is weeping for the lost and orphaned dawn
that is climbing in the window through the curtains that are drawn
and i’ll be gone.
